Court Sentences Osinachi’s Husband, Peter Nwachukwu, to Death by Hanging
Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel star Osinachi Nwachukwu, has been convicted of culpable homicide relating to her death on April 8, 2022.
GospelSong Download reports that Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Wuse Zone 2, delivered the judgment, sentencing Nwachukwu to death by hanging.
Conviction for Culpable Homicide
The judgment followed a case filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF). Justice Nwosu-Iheme ruled that the prosecution had sufficiently proven the burden of proof as required by law, leading to Peter Nwachukwu’s conviction on multiple charges.
The Federal Government had brought a 23-count charge against Nwachukwu, including:
- Culpable homicide punishable by death
- Spousal battery
- Child cruelty
- Criminal intimidation of spouse and children
After a detailed evaluation of the evidence, the court found the prosecution’s case proven beyond reasonable doubt.
Testimonies and Evidence Presented
The prosecution called 17 witnesses, among them Osinachi’s two children, who testified as the fourth and fifth prosecution witnesses. The court also admitted 25 documents as exhibits. Testimonies from Osinachi’s children and others painted a consistent and compelling picture of abuse and intimidation, strengthening the case against Nwachukwu.
Sentencing Details
In addition to the death sentence for culpable homicide (Count 1), the court handed Peter Nwachukwu several other penalties:
- Two years each for Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18
- Six months for Count 10
- Three years for Count 11
- Fines of N500,000 and N200,000 on Counts 6 and 7 respectively
Final Submissions Before Sentencing
Before the sentencing, defense counsel Reginald Nwali appealed to the court for leniency, pleading for compassion. However, prosecution counsel Mrs. Aderonke Imala urged the court to enforce the law firmly to ensure justice was served.
Justice Nwosu-Iheme ultimately agreed with the prosecution, emphasizing the need for justice in light of the grievous offences committed.
